6 Week Childbirth Prep

In this 18-hour course, which meets once a week for 6 weeks, expectant mothers and their partners/support person will prepare for the birth of their baby by learning what happens during labor physically and emotionally for all involved. At times, the curriculum may resonate with Hypnobirthing or HypnoBabies, Bradley, Lamaze, Birthing From Within or Birthworks, Mindfulness Based Childbirth Prep or Calm Birth. Rather than a single method, the Natural Resources Childbirth Prep course is designed to cover extensive ground which is particularly relevant to labor and birth in the San Francisco Bay Area. This ensures that each family is empowered and informed to find what works best for them. All of the Childbirth instructors also draw from practical experience attending births or working with new moms and babies directly.  While many of the mothers taking this class will go on to have unmedicated births, our real focus is on "normal" or physiologic birth. We define "normal birth" as birth with confidence and joy rather than with fear guiding decisions or actions.

The class includes: 
- discussion of the stages of labor
- practice of comfort measures, including labor positions, massage, counter pressure techniques, emotional support of the laboring woman, partner self-care, and much more
- relaxation, breathwork and guided visualization or mindfulness practice
- discussion of informed choice in a medical setting
- common interventions, including pain relief options (medical and non-medical)
-hospital birth and home birth, including what happens at each and who your caregivers will be

The course fee includes a copy of Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin. An informational binder will be provided, filled with local resources, web resources, diagrams, drawings and articles. 

Every week we will: practice relaxation, guided visualization or comfort measures and positions; review homework reading and exercises; and have an opportunity to ask questions.
